Definition of Scalars and Vectors:

What are Scalars?

The Physical quantities which have magnitude but no direction are called scalars. They are treated by algebraic operations. examples: mass, distance, energy, time, electric current etc.

What are Vectors?

The physical quantities which have magnitude as well as direction that is called vector. They are treated by vector operation. example: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, linear momentum, Impulse etc.

Frequently asked Questions:

Different kinds of vectors:

  1. Unit Vector
  2. Null Vector
  3. Parallel Vector
  4. Equal Vector
  5. Negative Vector
  6. Collinear Vector
  7. Coplanar Vector

What is Unit vector?

A vector having magnitude 1 is called unit vector.

What is Null vector?

A Vector having magnitude zero is called null vector. It can have any direction.

What are Parallel vectors?

Two Vectors having same direction are called parallel vectors.

What are Equal vectors?

Two vectors having same magnitude and same direction are called equal vectors.

What are Negative vectors?

Two vectors having same magnitude and same direction are called equal vectors.

What are Collinear vectors?

Two vectors acting along the same straight line or parallel to each other are called collinear vectors.

Now,

What is Triangle law of vector addition?

It states that if two vectors acting simultaneously on a body are represented both in magnitude and direction by the two sides of a triangle in an order, then their resultant is represented both in magnitude and direction by the third side of the triangle taken in opposite order.

What is Parallelogram law of vector addition?

It states that if two vectors acting simultaneously on a body are represented both in magnitude and direction by the two adjacent sides of a parallelogram then their resultant is represented both in magnitude and direction by the diagonal of the parallelogram drawn from the intersection of two adjacent sides.

What is Polygon law of vectors?

It states that if a number of vectors acting simultaneously on a body are represented both in magnitude and direction by the sides of a polygon in an order, then their resultant is represented both in magnitude and direction by the closed side of the polygon taken in opposite order.

Time has both magnitude and direction. Is it a vector?

No, It is scalar product because it is treated by simple algebraic rule it doesn't follow vectors rule.

Electric current has both magnitude and direction. Is it a vector or scalar?

Electric current is a scalar product because it doesn't obey the vector rule.

Should a physical quantity having both magnitude and direction be necessarily a vector? Explain with Example.

No, it should not be necessarily a vector because some physical quantities can have both magnitude and direction but they doesn't follow the vector rule.
For example: Time and electric current have both magnitude and direction but they aren't a vector quantities.

Is linear momentum a scalar or vector? Give reason.

Linear momentum is a vector product because it is a product of mass and velocity where mass is a scalar quantity and velocity is a vector quantity. When scalar quantity multiply with vector quantity, it is a vector.
